Innovative insurance to protect coral reefs after hurricanes in Guatemala: MARFund

In the Mesoamerican Reef region, stronger and more unpredictable hurricanes are damaging coral reefs that protect coastlines, support fisheries and sustain local livelihoods. Rapid action after storms is critical to prevent permanent ecosystem loss. With support from the UNDP-Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA), MARFund is using parametric insurance to fund rapid reef repair in the aftermath of hurricanes. The initiative supports trained diver brigades to remove debris, recover coral fragments and stabilize damaged reefs within days of impact. It combines financial innovation, community-led response, and ecosystem protection. The approach is strengthening coastal resilience and safeguarding vital marine ecosystems.
