The panel discussion will present an overview of weather, water, climate, and early warning services (hydromet services) in Central and Southern Africa as critical enablers for climate risk management and the green economy. The findings of the analytical work on the status quo, investment needs, and opportunities for regional collaboration will be discussed together with potential opportunities and approaches for strengthening them through national and regional investments. Building on this analytical work, the panel discussion will provide opportunities to brainstorm how to scale up the World Bank’s support for hydromet and early warning services in Central and Southern Africa. The panel discussion will present the analytical work and regional collaboration on hydromet services through ECCAS (Economic Community of Central Africa States) and SADC (Southern African Development Community), which was among others supported between 2016 and 2021 by the ACP-EU program Building Disaster Resilience to Natural Hazards in Sub-Saharan African Regions, Countries, and Communities Program. ABOUT THE GLOBAL FACILITY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION AND RECOVERY (GFDRR) is a global partnership that helps low- and lower-middle-income countries better understand and reduce their vulnerabilities to natural hazards and adapt to climate change.
