I’m a bartender here at Liquid Kitty in West LA California. And we’re gonna talk a little bit about a drink called Cuba Libre. It’s an interesting story behind it. You’re gonna hear maybe 3 to 4 variations on it. I’m gonna tell you my favorite variation of the story. It was simply a rum and coke which has been around for hundred years. But during Spanish-American war, when Spain tried to take over Cuba people ordered Rum and Coke. They ordered Cuba Libre, and meant they were part of the revolution of free Cuba. [In Russia, Cuba Libre without the lime juice is called Rock-n-roll Star, after the popular song that features the recipe.] Cuba, cuba. Libre, free. It’s the story I like. I don’t know if it’s true but it’s whimsical enough go I want Cuba Libre which means I want a free cuba. But you couldn’t say that cause it’s too obvious that you want a free Cuba so what you did is you order Rum and Coke with a lime. Lime represented Cuba Libre, free cuba and that’s where the term Cuba Libre came from. So really, it’s just rum and coke with a lime. So if you order rum and coke, you don’t care about Cuba. If you order rum and coke with a lime, you want cuba free. And that’s the version that I like. I’m gonna tell you about the drink, it’s really simple. Fill a collins glass with ice. If you could, use Cuban Rum because it’s Cuba Libre. We’re gonna use Bacardi. And as other mixed drink, you should do about an ounce and a half of rum. [1 ½ oz of rum] More ice. And then fill it with your mixer, coke. [3 oz of Coca Cola] And let’s make it a Cuba Libre with a nice fresh cut lime. There’s your cuba libre.
