Brhaddhvani presents Śōbhillu Saptasvara in the Karaikudi tradition performed by Karaikudi Subramanian accompanied by Karaikudi Krishnamurthy on the mridangam. Karaikudi Subramanian is joined by his disciples Veera Raagavan Srinivas, Thenuga & Mathuriga Thevapalan. The illustrations are from the renowned painter-musician, S. Rajam whose paintings adorn the homes of musicians, rasikas and concert spaces. "There are two important points to note in Tyagaraja’s Śōbhillu presented in this version: This is one of the many songs where Tyagaraja exemplifies the yogic conception of nāda, the svarās and their origin related to the human body from the traditional musical, musicological, cultural and religious points of view. In this respect Tyagaraja reveals voice culture in the process of production of sound in Indian music. The anupallavi line, “nābhī hr̥t kaṇṭha rasana nāsādulayandu”, echoes the statements in the ancient musical treatise Sangita Makaranda. I have researched on the use of voice by different renowned Karnatak musicians. But my experience in voice culture purely based on the assertions of this great composer in conjunction with the quality of sound production on the vina as the replica of the human body has produced greatly satisfying results. The second point to note is the appended cittasvara composed by Karaikudi Veenai Sambasiva Iyer, which has become part and parcel of this song." - Karaikudi S.
