There are discrepancies in the Bible, but are there errors? Does this disprove the Bible? Does it disprove a divine force behind the Bible? It's important to say that there are some differences in the Bible that actually don't contradict each other, and then there are some, minor (usually less significant) discrepancies that do seem to be difficult to resolve. But lots of apparent discrepancies aren't to hard to resolve if you think about them and research what scholars have said. Here's the most important point from this video: Imagine if we knew that every word of the Bible was flawless, was written by Jesus himself, and had not a single error... How would we react to that version of the Bible? We would probably not only revere it, we would be maniacal about the smallest minutiae. We would perseverate over every pen stroke. So, maybe it's a good thing that the Bible is a book written by humans with spellingg erors, tpyos, and even some factual discrepancies. I offer this thought experiment because so many people ask me why God didn't leave humans with a document that's more flawless. Some other points that I make in the video: 1 - Literalism as a recent invention. The earliest Christians didn't believe in the Bible as a literally true document. They knew that the universe and the Earth hadn't been created in 6 days. Instead, they saw symbolism and metaphor. 2 - Let's debate details. Let's delve into them. But let's not rest our theology on a sequence of dates and events from 2000 years ago. Let's not swallow a camel while we're straining out the gnats. Let's not create an orthodoxy that's just a heresy in disguise. 3 - History is replete with witness accounts that are flawed memories. We shouldn't expect the Bible to be any different, no matter what human or divine forces are behind it. 4 - The debate over the Bible and its messages is meant to be undertaken by critical thinking human beings with complex thoughts and nuanced opinions. Maybe that's the reason why we can find flaws in it. 5 - Although there were efforts to "harmonize" Gospels (like Tatian's Diatessaron), the early church figures endorsed an ethos of scrupulous transparency and intellectual honesty. This is something that we don't acknowledge enough, even though it's not present in every religious tradition. 6 - We should reject fundamentalisms, especially if they put us at odds with obvious scientific evidence. Christian fundamentalism largely exists because in 1890, two oil tycoons invested $300 million dollars into it. Thanks so much for checking out this video!
