I recently graduated from UCSD with a degree in mathematics-computer science and I am now a full time technical program manager at Microsoft. After working full time at a large tech company and coding 5-6 hours a day for the past couple months, I wanted to give a realistic perspective on the lucrative computer science major. Let's face it, studying computer science isn't for everyone (and neither is any field anyway). Having employees and coworkers all from the same academic background, can greatly hinder innovation. Therefore, majoring in computer science isn't the only path to working in tech. Other popular majors like cognitive science, UX/UI design, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, math, physics etc. all have their own unique paths within the tech industry. The tech industry greatly benefits from having teams comprised of different problem solvers! If you are considering majoring in computer science, it is also important to ask yourself why? Why are you becoming a computer science major, why do you want to be a software engineer? etc. Asking why, will help you outline your priorities, and see if those priorities align with how you define a successful career. An important note to consider is that, as a computer science major and eventual software engineer, you will likely be spending all/most of your day in front of a computer. Now that can be great news for some programmers, and bad news for others. Eye strain and body fatigue can become annoying routines throughout the post-grad life of a computer science student and current software engineer. Additionally, college is extremely expensive. It's vital to look at your personal finance options and how that will play into your future aspirations. Coding bootcamps have also been on the rise. Unfortunately, I can't personally speak on the success rate of coding bootcamps, but they seem to be another viable non-traditional path towards working in tech! To learn more about coding bootcamps, consider checking out the other two tech YouTubers I mentioned: Clément Mihailescu : / @clem Joshua Fluke : / joshuafluke1 Lastly, if you're only reason for not wanting to be a computer science major is the fear of not being good enough, I strongly urge you to keep trying. With determination and discipline almost anything is possible! #programming #computerscience #computersciencemajor c r e d i t s 🎵 ---------------------------------------- Field Of Fireflies by Purrple Cat | https://purrplecat.com Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... d i s c l a i m e r ---------------------------------------- I do not claim to own any or all of the pictures/footage that may be shown in this video.
