How it All Began: The First Collation of the Quran الْجَمْعُ الْأَوَّلُ لِلْقُرْآنِ During the battle of Yamamah (year 11 or 12 AH) some thirty to fifty memorizers (الْحُفَّاظ) of the Quran were martyred. “The early historian Khalīfa b. Khayyāṭ al-ʿUṣfurī (d. 240/854) records from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib (d. 97/715) that the total number of Muslims martyred in the battle was 500, of which 30 or 50 were carriers of the Quran (حَمَلَةُ الْقُرْآنِ), a designation typically used for those who had memorized the Qur’an.” One of the most notable among the martyrs was Sālim , the tribal client (مَوْلًى) of Abū Ḥudhayfa. رضي الله عنهما This alarmed ʿUmar because if, hypothetically, all transmitters (memorizers and reciters) of the Quran were gone, most if not all of the Quran would be lost. Zayd bin Thabit (d 45 AH, p139) narrates the following beautiful story, as documented in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhari (4986): “Abu Bakr As-Siddiq sent for me after a lot of people at the battle of Yamama were killed. (I went to him) and was surprised to find ʿUmar bin al- Khattab with him. Abu Bakr then said (to me), "ʿUmar has come to me and said: "Casualties were heavy among the Qurraʾ of the Qur'an (i.e. those who knew the Qur'an by heart) on the day of the Battle of Yamama. And I am afraid that more casualties may take place among the Qurraʾ on other battlefields, which will cause a large part of the Qur'an to be lost. As such, I am of the opinion that you (i.e., Abu Bakr) should decree that the Qur'an be collated (in one book)." I (i.e., Abu Bakr) said to ʿUmar, "How can you do something which Allah's Messenger ﷺ did not do?" ʿUmar responded by saying, "This is, by Allah, good." ʿUmar kept on urging me to do it till Allah opened my heart for it, and I began to see what ʿUmar saw in it." Then Zayd said: “Abu Bakr said (to me). 'You are a wise young man. We do not suspect or accuse you of anything. You used to write the revelation for Allah’s Messenger ﷺ. So, track the Quran and collate it all in one book. By Allah if they had ordered me to shift one of the mountains, it would not have been heavier for me than ordering me to collect the Quran. Then I (i.e., Zayd) said to Abu Bakr, "How will you do something which Allah's Messenger ﷺ did not do?" Abu Bakr replied, "This is, by Allah, good." Abu Bakr kept on urging me to accept his idea until Allah opened my heart for what He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and ʿUmar (رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما) for. So, I started tracking the Quran by collecting it from (what was written on) palm stalks, thin white stones and also from the men who knew it by heart, till I found the last part (i.e., the last two verses) of surat al-Taubah with Abu Khuzaima al-Ansari, and I did not find it with anybody other than him. (The verses are): 'Verily there has come unto you a messenger from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty.. (till the end of Surat-Baraa' (at-Tauba).’ Thereafter, the suhuf (صُحُف) remained with Abu Bakr till he died, then with ʿUmar till the end of his life, and then with Hafsa (رضي الله عنها), the daughter of ʿUmar and the wife of the Messenger ﷺ.” The Story of Abu Khuzaima al-Ansari (رضي الله عنه) Why was his testimonial about the last two verses accepted without a second witness?
