I am Der Geher and today I walk through Othmarschen. From the erratic boulder Alter Schwede I walk north. Across the Elbchaussee and along Roosens Weg to the Christuskirche. The Grotsche Heide lies above the northern entrance of the Elbtunnel. At Bernadottestraße are the Ansgarkirche and Rathenaupark and it goes back to the Elbe. The walk ends at the Oevelgönne pier. The name Othmerschen can be interpreted as uninhabited swamp lands. Only a few farms in the Middle Ages were located here. The former center of the village is at the Röperhof from 1756. From this time on, the first country houses of wealthy merchants were built along the Elbchaussee. It was not until the 19th century that Othmarschen began to grow. In 1882 there was the first stop of the suburban railroad and from 1899 a streetcar to Altona. With the construction of the Elbe tunnel in the 1960s, the picture changed again considerably. Today, about 16,000 inhabitants live here.
