Applying Qualitative Comparative Analysis in Urban Migration Studies

This webinar with dr Asya Pisarevskaya from the University of Rotterdam explores the application of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) in the field of urban migration studies. Building on Dr Asya Pisarevskaya’s previous work, it introduces the principles of this set-theoretic method, detailing its standard procedure and the concept of causality as understood in QCA. The webinar highlights QCA’s advantages, including its ability to handle complex causal patterns, as well as its limitations and common pitfalls. QCA’s versatility as both a stand-alone method and a complementary tool—when paired with statistical analysis or qualitative interviews—is also discussed. Drawing from examples from her recent work, i.e. the book Cities of Migration 2024, and articles such as “Understanding the diversity of local diversities: an analysis of the (mis)match between policies and diversity configurations in Dutch municipalities” (2023) and “Why do some cities support irregular migrants? Qualitative comparative analysis of municipal activism for irregular migrants in 13 European global cities” (2024), dr. Pisarevskaya illustrates how QCA can advance our understanding of urban migration governance and policy responses. This webinar provides practical insights into the application of QCA, offering valuable guidance for researchers interested in comparative analysis within migration studies and beyond. Asya Pisarevskaya is an Assistant Professor of Migration and Diversity Governance in the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research focuses on migration-related diversity and governance practices in European cities. Her interest in comparative research began during her PhD in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research at the University of Milan and the University of Turin. Her dissertation offered a comparative analysis of policies shaping the labour market integration of humanitarian migrants across seven European countries between 1990 and 2008. Currently, she employs qualitative and quantitative methods to conduct comparative analyses of urban migration, integration, and anti-discrimination governance at local and cross-national levels. This research line is exemplified by her recent book, co-authored with Peter Scholten, 'Cities of Migration. Understanding the diversity of urban diversities in Europe'. Springer. 2024.
