Palaeontological mysteries are always fun, but so too is solving them. In the Silurian rocks of Wales, but also Europe and North America, are abundant organic filaments, at least some of which have been studied in detail and are referred to as 'banded tubes'. They've been implicated in the early evolution of land plants, or assigned to unknown fungus-like organisms, or even to hydroids... but have only ever been found as isolated tubes or bundles of them. Until now. Complete specimens show a strangely sponge-like body form, but not a sponge-like skeleton. Join Joe and Lucy for a discussion of how these fossils might be identified, how we can interpret them, and where we go from here. Live science, brought to your living room! With a special guest appearance by retiolitid graptolites!
