In this week’s travel episode, we explore the beautiful and historic region of Normandy, France, discovering some of the very best things to do here. Over 3 unforgettable days, we visit three incredible locations: Mont-Saint-Michel, the medieval city of Rouen, and the charming seaside town of Honfleur. We begin our journey at Mont-Saint-Michel, a fortified tidal island dating back over 1,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is truly one of the most spectacular travel destinations in the world. Walking along the historic ramparts, we make our way up to the abbey at the top. While entry to the abbey costs €16, it is absolutely worth the visit. Be sure to book your tickets well in advance—especially during the summer months—since it can get very busy. Our second stop takes us to Rouen, the capital of Normandy. This medieval city is known for its stunning churches and half-timbered houses. It’s also the place where Joan of Arc was executed in 1431. During our time here, we visit several historic landmarks, including the magnificent Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen. Fun fact: this cathedral was once the tallest building in the world (1876–1880) when its spire reached 151 meters high! It also famously inspired a series of paintings by Claude Monet, who captured its façade in different light conditions. We also explore the 15th-century astronomical clock, Gros-Horloge, and visit the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Rouen quickly became one of our favorite cities in Europe—you can easily spend a full day, if not two, wandering its cobblestone streets and discovering its rich history. Finally, we end our trip in Honfleur, a picturesque port town perfect for a relaxing seaside escape. It’s an ideal day trip destination and a wonderful place to enjoy a meal by the water. While here, we visit Église Sainte-Catherine, the largest wooden church in France, built in the 15th century by shipbuilders. Normandy has so much more to offer, and you could easily turn this into a full week-long adventure. Consider visiting the walled city of Saint-Malo, the town of Évreux, or Giverny, where you can explore the beautiful gardens of Claude Monet. We hope you enjoyed this travel episode!
