Year-end winter camping in Hokkaido at Arten Tomakomai. A quiet −8°C night with firelight, Japanese New Year traditions, and seasonal food. Although there was very little snow this time, the temperature dropped to −8°C, creating a crisp and quiet winter atmosphere as the year came to an end. We decorated the entrance of our tent with shimekazari, a traditional Japanese New Year decoration, and slowly embraced the calm of the season. For lunch, we enjoyed kamo nanban soba — buckwheat noodles with duck — a comforting variation of toshikoshi soba, traditionally eaten on New Year’s Eve to mark the passing year. In the late afternoon, we stepped outside and lit a fire. While warming ourselves, we enjoyed galettes and quietly watched the final sunset of the year. At night, we prepared a special dinner: sukiyaki made with Shiraoi wagyu beef, one of Hokkaido’s prized local ingredients. In this video, we enjoy both Kansai-style and Kanto-style sukiyaki, showing two different regional approaches to this classic Japanese dish. To end the night, we shared dessert along with a craft beer that perfectly matched the relaxed atmosphere of the campsite. In Japan, New Year’s Eve is a time to slow down, enjoy meaningful food, and gently say goodbye to the year that is ending. This video captures a peaceful year-end winter camping night, where cold air, firelight, and Japanese food traditions come together. 🎥 Filmed with DJI Pocket 3 / SONY ZV-1 / iPhone 16 Pro / DJI Action 5 👉 Subscribe here / @kleinandhiro 🏕️ Camping Gear Used in This Video Here are the camping items we used in this video.
