I've always been very fond of and attached to the prototypes and the history of Audi Sport in the world endurance championships, given that I also started to grow my Youtube channel thanks to those famous pre-Le Mans testing videos at Monza with the Audi R15 and R18. So it was really cool to have seen in action the two progenitors of the Audi sport prototype dynasty during the 2024 Festival of Speed celebration both the Team Joest and Goodwood's main theme 'Horseless to Hybrid' Audi began research into entering the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997. The first concept was displayed in 1998, showing an open cockpit car which featured many Audi styling cues, yet lacked some of the practical necessities for sports car racing. It was built by Dallara and featured an Audi 3.6-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. In 1998 the ACO was involved in defining new regulations that would allow to equalize the performance of closed-body and open-cockpit prototypes but the first ones like the Porsche 911 GT1, Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR, and the Toyota GT-One proved successful until that moment. Audi decided to split its efforts which led to the split between the R8R and R8C. As such, Audi divided the workload by assigning each project to different firms. Dallara to work on the open-cockpit R8R for the LMP class, and Racing Technology Norfolk (RTN) for the R8C LMGTP. Despite having substantially identical mechanics, the two cars are very different on an aesthetic and aerodynamic level. The R8C and R8R both use the 600 hp 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, but are radically different aerodynamically. While the R8R has a large number of vents placed on the nose, most of the intakes and air exits on the R8C are placed on the sides. The R8C also has thinner wheel arches, partially due to LMGTP rules, at the time, that stipulate the LMGTP cars use thinner tires than the LMP cars in order to off-set the better aerodynamic efficiency, and thus higher top speeds, of the LMGTP cars At the 1999 Le Mans 24h, Audi entered four cars in the two main categories, two R8Rs and two R8Cs: the R8R was already a much more refined than its coupé sister, as the barchetta had already debuted at the beginning of the season, had already undergone an initial evolution before Le Mans and was better supported given that Joest Racing, a team with lots of experience in endurance racing, was chosen by Audi to became the official Audi Sport team. Although the R8Rs weren't very extreme cars in terms of technical solutions adopted, compared to the competition, they managed to do a regular race with just some solvable gearbox isseus, finishing in third and fourth position overall on their debut at the Circuit de la Sarthe. On the other hand, the two R8Cs proved disappointing due to the lesser development to which they were subjected. During the pre-Le Mans test days the cars suffered numerous setbacks and lacked pace both compared to the R8Rs and overall, with aerodynamic instability being the main issue compared to other cars, which, besides creating handling difficulties, was causing a build-up of air underneath the engine cover. This issue caused the R8Cs to lose their rear engine covers on several occasions while at speed. Audi Sport UK was unable to significantly improve the R8Cs in the month between the test and the actual race. The two R8Cs had both to withdrow from the race due to gearbox problems. After Le Mans, Audi decided it would concentrate on only one of the two projects going forward. The dismal performance of the R8C, combined with the exodus of all the other manufacturers from the LMGTP class, led Audi to focus on developing the R8R. This would lead to the Audi R8 LMP, which would win Le Mans a total of 5 times between 2000 and 2005. Audi would return to the LMGTP class in 2001 with the Bentley EXP Speed 8. Although similar visually to the R8C, the Bentley EXP Speed 8 was a fresh design other than the Audi engine which powered it and the aerodynamic lessons learned from the R8C.
