A local Abilene golfer checked off a major bucket list item—playing alongside a professional. KTXS's Jackson Burlison caught up with her and her family to talk about this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Bryson DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion and current LIV Golf competitor, is taking on five young golfers in a nine-hole challenge. One of them is Abilene native Aspen Clawson. She’s been golfing since she was little and competing in tournaments for the past three years. Playing alongside a major champion is a rare experience—but how did it all come together? "Two years ago at Drive, Chip, and Putt, there was this lady named Julian, and she liked my swing, so she asked me this year if I wanted to play with Bryson DeChambeau," said local 7th-grade golfer Aspen Clawson. "I was very surprised, and it was very unrealistic, really; I didn’t really think that could happen." It happened—and along the way, Clawson picked up a few tips and tricks from DeChambeau on the course. "I didn’t know that about the greens, so it helped a lot, and when I am chipping, sometimes I fall behind, so I need to get more for it," said Clawson. For Clawson’s parents, watching her discover a passion at such a young age has been the ultimate reward. "I think it's so crazy that, being a 13-year-old, she knows exactly what she wants to do, and she's invested so much time and effort into it," said Aspen's mother, Lacy Clawson. "Just watching things unfold for her that are finally coming to fruition. It's just everything a parent could dream of." As they learned along the way, the five kids developed a strategy over nine holes that ultimately helped them beat DeChambeau at his own challenge. "So it started off, we would all just like hit our ball and not really communicate," said Clawson. "So after about probably two holes, we would hit one safe shot and make it in the fairway, and then maybe go for it like on a six." Despite all she’s accomplished so early in her golf career, her parents still describe this experience as a dream come true. "I was probably more nervous than she was," said Lacy Clawson. "It still feels like a dream, like it was surreal that she got to do it and have the experience, and he was such a cool guy," said Aspen's father, James Clawson.
