Episode 1292 Rita (Barbara Knox) worries about whether the newsagent’s shop will be profitable. Annie (Doris Speed) calls a staff meeting at the Rovers and announces she is going away for at least a month and that the brewery will be sending a relief manager. Jerry (Graham Haberfield) chats up Mavis Riley (Thelma Barlow) from the warehouse and arranges to meet her for a drink that evening. Annie and Elsie (Pat Phoenix) clear the air. The relief manager, Glyn Thomas (Alan David), introduces himself after quietly observing the bar, keen to see how things are run before taking charge. Mavis tells Jerry she is unhappy working at the warehouse and would like a change. When Len (Peter Adamson) refuses to employ an assistant at the shop because of the cost, Rita angrily tells him he can shove the job and find someone else to slave away for him.
