On Monday, July 6, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. (noon), the Xenia/Greene Central Communications Center conducted the monthly test of the Disaster Warning System for all jurisdictions with sirens in Greene County. I was able to go to another monthly siren test here in Greene County; so I chose to go to Xenia as it was another quarterly test of the nuclear alert tone of the system (which is fast wail). I chose this unit off of Ormsby Drive at the site of the old Spring Hill Elementary School, since there is a very low mounted Thunderbolt 1000T sitting next to it, which has been here (and abandoned) since the current siren system went up in 2003. They have 10 of these SRNBs; 5 in the city and 5 in the township. They replaced 10 Thunderbolt sirens purchased by the city and township respectively after the April 1974 tornado, which failed during the September 20, 2000 F3 tornado due to a power outage. The new sirens were funded by FEMA's Project Impact, which was a program aimed at effective mitigation strategies for communities vulnerable to disaster. Xenia was the first Project Impact community to receive the funding immediately following a disaster; they received the funds on October 20, 2000, one month after the tornado hit. I got a bit more than I bargained for today; as we ended up getting a full three minutes of fast wail for today's test due to the dispatchers at Central Communications handling a medical call. Something odd I also noticed this month as opposed to April's quarterly fast wail test was that this month, the siren goes straight into fast wail from alert, and the alert cycle was about a minute shorter than April, but I'm sure not complaining. I was going to feature a zoomed out shot in this video, but my editor wasn't having it; oh well. Oh, I also met up with Zach (Shaky Sirens), Aiden (Sirens of SW Ohio), and Jeremy and Dominic (SuperSirex127). Enjoy! Sirens in Xenia and Xenia Township (as well as in all of Greene County) are tested on the First Monday of every month at noon. Tests are only cancelled if storms or severe weather are in the immediate area at time of testing, or if another emergency warrants cancellation of the test. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Camera(s) Used: Panasonic HC-V380 (main video), Canon Vixia HF-R700 (main audio), Canon Powershot SX50HS (Intro Photos) © Copyright 2020 by firefreak57 studios.
