Te Araroa Trail Thru Hike November 30th, 2022 Day 22, ZERO DAY Zero Miles. What do you do on a zero mile day? What do you do on a zero day when the “town” consists of only a cafe, motel, and McDonald’s? Well… you go on a merry-go-round of living in luxury! The morning began with a cafe breakfast, and it was glorious! A quick pit stop at the McDonald’s on the way back to the motel, due to rain and storms coming in shortly, and we were ready to hunker down. Filling our time with a little watching of the World Cup, internet chores, eating, and trying to get the laundry machine to work (more on this soon) brought us to the storm, and whew, she was a doozy! It had been forecasted to rain all day today, thus our zero day, yet it only intensely rained for 2-3 hours… thus is the flavor of New Zealand, you can almost guarantee everyday will have some form of rain, take the forecasting wisely but also with a lot of flexibility. Still we were happy to have avoided the downpour and storms as they were pretty intense, and went back to get our laundry going. It appeared someone else had figured out how to turn it on, so we patiently waited until their load was done, and then moved their clothes to the dryer so we could start our load (which they had previously thrown on the ground). Cue 30~ minutes later and a lady comes knocking on our door accusing us of “stealing her load” by which she meant we opened the laundry and used her $2 coin to switch ours into it…. One it doesn’t work that way… and two we would never be that impolite. Yet, she was adamant she had not been gone long enough for the load to have finished naturally (she was gone 2 hours…) and wouldn’t listen to us peacefully trying to explain our situation. Finally exhausted we just gave her a $2 coin to stop her berating us. Later when the motel staff arrived we wanted to clear the air so there wouldn’t be a bad name for hikers even if it was from false information. The employee when we told her the story said “oh that woman” and rolled her eyes, and told us not to worry. From her reaction it helped put us at peace feeling that our interaction was not the only one they have had to deal with in the past. Laundry conundrum aside, we are a quart of ice cream, uploaded videos, relaxed, edited @offtrailpodcast and soaked in the zero day. Overall good day albeit with a hint of weird flavoring
