2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Animation

The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season was the 2nd consecutive above average season for the Atlantic following 2023. The season had a hyperactive ACE count of 164, the highest in the Atlantic since 2020. The season ended up becoming the 2nd costliest Atlantic Hurricane season on record with over $227B USD, ahead of 2005 but behind of 2017. This damage was primarily from storms like Beryl that ravaged the Caribbean Sea, Helene that caused catastrophic damage in the Southeastern US, Milton that further damaged Florida weeks after Helene, and Debby that foreshadowed what was to come for Florida later that season, and causing massive flooding in Quebec becoming the costliest tropical cyclone or its remnants in Canadian history. It was the deadliest season since 2020 with 400 people losing their lives this season, primarily due to Beryl and Helene. Milton was the strongest storm of the season and the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide by our estimates peaking as an extremely powerful Category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico in early October, the first Atlantic hurricane with a pressure below 900mbars since Wilma in 2005. This season will be remembered for a long time due to its activity, comeback after a period of inactivity between July & August, the overperformance of storms against forecasts and modeling (barring a few), and of course, the notable amount of hurricanes and major hurricanes.
