In September 2024, I filmed the final day of diesel service north of San Jose, capturing the retirement of Caltrain's iconic F40 locomotives and gallery cars. The F40s had been in service for nearly 40 years, first entering service with Caltrain in 1985, and they leave behind a legacy of dependable service. While the MP36s are still in use south of San Jose to Gilroy, with occasional F40 appearances, these diesel engines and gallery cars are now mostly a thing of the past. Join me as we take a look back at these legendary locomotives and cars in their final moments of service, before Caltrain transitioned to fully electric EMUs.
