What happened to Britain's secret underground bunkers after WW2? From Churchill's War Rooms to Cold War nuclear shelters - the fate of hundreds of hidden fortresses. During World War 2, Britain constructed hundreds of secret underground bunkers across the country - from Churchill's War Rooms beneath Whitehall to regional command centers and RAF operations rooms. After VE Day in 1945, most were sealed and forgotten. But during the Cold War (1950s-1980s), these bunkers were reactivated and upgraded for nuclear warfare. When the Cold War ended in 1991, they were finally decommissioned.
