Steve: Parkland has a demographic of younger people, 30’s 40’s, families, it is a unique community in the sense that it is very elegant very gorgeous, what typically you would find in an older retired community, but in fact it is a very young and dynamic demographic. Mary: When I first started with Parkland golf and country club, there was a big push, to try and make the community aware of their speed. Steve: A great deal of effort and research and study went into different methods of mitigating speeding. In the interest of quality of life and effectiveness, we landed on Guardian Pro cameras and went from there. Mary: We’re very impressed with how effective these have been. Moving forward Steve’s committee is looking to purchase an additional 3 cameras before the end of the year. Steve: We purchased 3, 3 cameras, live cameras, we do have some dummies, 2 dummies. We’re moving forward with an additional 3, which was the original plan was for 6. There’s no question that there was a lot of pushback early on. And some of that I suppose is fed by the news media and whatnot, and issues that municipalities have with traffic cameras of any kind. But with a lot of explaining and a few weeks of it actually happening, and folks beginning to mind themselves, change their behaviour, it became much more pleasant. In fact, today the community is very pleased with the results. They can feel it, when their driving around the community they and their neighbors have reduced their speed and are minding the way they drive in the community. Mary: Our initial information that we took of the first 2 to 3 weeks of the cameras being working, we issued 9300 citations, or at least cited or noted 9300 speeders. 8 Weeks later we’re down to about 835, so a total of about 91% decrease in speeding, very happy with the results. Steve: We’ve seen a 91% decrease in folks that are speeding from the first couple of weeks that we first started monitoring to about 2 months later when we pulled out the same data from the same cameras from the same location before they were moved. It’s just a dramatic decrease in speeding, it’s really surprising, no way could we have imagined that it would be as effective as it has turned out to be. Mary: All of the surrounding communities are coming to us for advice on them, so it’s going to become a Parkland thing. Steve: The whole tone of a community can be changed, with something as simple as mitigating speeding. You sense a different tone in the community, it’s more peaceful, it has a friendlier feel to it because folks are behaving themselves and you know, they’re realizing that when they come to the gates of Parkland golf and country club, it’s a beautiful place, their whole mentality can change and part of it is when they slow down and take just it a little bit easier on the way home.
