The pre-reading before watching this class is Unit A5 "Writing Items and Tasks" in Fulcher and Davidson (2007). Language Testing and Assessment: An Advanced Resource Book. Routledge. Although it is a pirate copy that infringes my intellectual and financial rights, you can download the book here: https://www.kau.edu.sa/Files/0005056/.... The post-class reading is Units A6 and B6 on researching tasks. The class and the associated podcast focus entirely on multiple choice items (listen to the podcast after the video class). However, the design of language assessment tasks is much wider than just multiple choice. Much of this is covered in the reading, One of the most accessible books on task design from a wide perspective is Cyril Weir's (1993). Understanding and Developing Language Tests. Prentice Hall International. It may have been published in the last century, but it still feels completely up-to-date. You can get second hand copies at very reasonable prices from sources like abebooks.com. I'm also going to recommend an older paper of mine from 1998, which shows how items can be generated to reflect choices of constructs; this process provides a direct link between items and and score meaning, as well as providing a research agenda for investigating test item responses. The class and associated materials are designed to show that writing test items and tasks is a theoretically driven, research-oriented process. If we are to claim that we know what a test score means, we must be able to show the link between item response, construct meaning, and application to real-world communication. This is just one reason why item and task design is a highly skilled professional process.
