→ Join me on a last-minute booked flight back home to Tucson (through San Diego) as my trip on United for the day had fallen apart spectacularly. The gist of it was I got to the departure gate of my first flight, a 787 to Houston, the plane wasn't there, and it was boarding time. An hour passed, and the plane still wasn't there. The root cause of this delay was "late tow to gate". This plane landed the previous morning (over 24 hours ago) from London, so I can't imagine why the tow to the gate was taking so long. Beyond that, because it was an international arrival, a security search and cleaning had to be completed. Also, I can't imagine why this was not completed while it was parked for OVER 24 HOURS. At the time that we were supposed to be boarding (after the initial delay), I witnessed an agent come up the jetbridge and whisper in the gate agent's ear, the gate agent sighed, got on the overhead radio, and said "Folks, the new departure time is 6:30PM" — followed by an audible uproar of the passengers. They all got in line at the podium for rebooking, while I did it myself on the United app by outright canceling the trip and rebooking on Southwest back to Tucson. But, don't worry, that original United trip DID happen, albeit, later than planned, so keep a wide eye open for that amazing trip! → This flight was a through flight from San Francisco to Tucson through San Diego. I was super excited that this was scheduled on a 737 MAX 8, so it made the defeated feeling from earlier ease a little bit more. Funny enough, this flight was the fullest Southwest flight of the day. I chose to sit near the rear of the cabin to up my chance of having a free middle seat — which I did. We push back from gate B13 and sit for a while as SFO decided to do an entire pattern change after our pilots had programmed for the original pattern. Once reprogrammed, we taxi to runway 28L and blast off, giving us a great view of the SFO terminal layout. Climbing out to the west, we climb to cruise at a mere 29,000 feet and head south, along the coast, then descend towards San Diego, and get a great view of looming rain showers near the airport. We fly the downwind to runway 27, then turn base and say goodbye to the clouds and hello to the sunshine all the way down to the runway, where we land and use the whole runway to slow down, then taxi to gate 6, where this flight comes to an end.
