For musicians who feel discouraged, stuck, or unable to bounce back, this practical mindset tool can help you climb out of the maze of negative thinking—so you can take positive action. Get back into forward motion. Note: Grateful Flow is a Tool created by the therapists Phil Stutz and Barry Michels (I'm a huge fan). And I've adapted the Tool here for musicians. Here are the instructions for the Tool itself without all the set-up: 1. Close your eyes and say either in your mind's eye or out loud the small, everyday things you are actually grateful for. (For me, at this moment, it’s the ginger tea I had this morning. It’s the fact that I have this time now to think and write about what matters. It’s the conversation I had yesterday with my friend Tommy and the view outside my dining room window of the Birch trees in the morning light.) Make your own list going slowly enough so you can actually feel grateful. 2. After about 30 seconds, stop making the list and just notice how your body feels. You may sense a softening in your chest — a feeling of opening up. 3. Lean into that feeling so that you have a sense of being connected to something much bigger than yourself. Call it wonder, the life force, a higher power, God, or whatever works for you. It’s this connection to something beyond ourselves that can help fuel our work so we can live into our best selves. It's my favorite starter Tool for musicians who are new to the practice and who want to get more of their best work out into the world.
