Developing Data-Driven Intelligence Experiences with Interactive Visualization Artificial intelligence and interactive graphics have been traditionally isolated. Maintaining a competitive advantage in today’s technological climate requires delivering experiences with heavy reliance on increasingly data-rich backends. The cycle from usage data to back-end production back to front-end decisions have traditionally been series of ‘throw over the wall’ transfers; data is analyzed verbosely, algorithms are served optimally and front-end changes are made discreetly. Even as modern data pipelines are directly informing front-ends, data visualization is still often a tangential task. The contextual complexity in many of today's intelligent applications allow for visual correlations between the user and developer experiences. In this talk, Colin will present effective data manipulation techniques, visualization patterns for analyzing machine learning pipeline data and how to pair with them with successful data interaction idioms from HCI research. He will share a number of his interaction and code patterns which maximize the utility of these findings. Using functional programming techniques, these patterns increase developer experience through clear mental models while optimally utilizing CPUs, GPUs and SIMD FPUs to deliver smooth interactive analysis and heightened data legibility. He will show examples of his work exposing the power of interactive visual analysis coupled with Fourier analysis which expose hidden depths in data. He will then discuss his interaction model which allows development data to be interactively rendered in situ on top of the user experience, and means to seamlessly interoperate these findings with modern applications. Everyone will walk away with a broader sense of data exploration. Biography Colin Roache is an Oakland-native developer bringing over a decade of building digital engaging experiences for Fortune 100s, startups, data design agencies and museums to Adobe Design Lab. ADL is an unbounded think tank which shapes the course of Adobe’s future across all of Creative Cloud, Document Cloud and Experience Cloud. Using ideation, design and development, he seeds new applications, optimization features and design patterns into research and product organizations. His background in distributed interactive systems and signal processing has spanned from coding vision systems for education, visual analytics for cloud security platforms and visualization experiences for a long list of clients including Björk, Passion Pit, Boiler Room and premier SF night clubs to R&D for futurism labs at Google and building projection installations at the Exploratorium. He currently focuses on the intersection of machine learning and developer experience.
