BobBlast #583 How I Choose Color: An Abstract Demo Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! The Burridge Goof-Proof Color Wheel is a combination of different types of colors wheels. Mine is an accumulation of ideal colors, working together in my paintings. With my Color Wheel, I choose four colors for the painting. I call the combination “goof-proof” because I have found, using this approach of four colors, my work gets done quicker and I can usually paint five more in the same series to stay familiar with this chosen color combo. This is how my Color Wheel works for me—Using the Color Wheel spinner, I chose those four colors plus black and white. Those are the only colors I put on my painting table. No need to make this more confusing by having stuff around that doesn’t serve me. My painting goals and concept have already been journaled. Now I select the dominant color, which best expresses the painting title. Yes—I title my paintings before I start to paint. When the painting matches its title, I consider the painting finished. Back to the Color Wheel… •80% of the Dominant Color and its variation of colors is brushed all over the surface. Dominant—get it? •From the spinner, the Focal Point Color is about 10% of the footprint. Put the focal point color wherever you decide, but only in one section •Two Spice Colors (5% each of the footprint) are added near the focal point. The Spice Colors say, “Look over here!” That’s it—This is how I choose my colors. For this BobBlast, my demo is an abstract painting, using four colors from my Color Wheel: •Blue is the dominant •Red is the focal point •Yellow and Purple are the spice colors •Plus Black and White for all the reasons The painting title is “Welcome Home”; the surface is a 15x15 inch, 300 lb Fabriano Artistico Cold Press, pre-gessoed watercolor paper. The design composition is Asymmetrical—with a lot of busyness on one side and one focal point on the quiet side. All color mixing is done on the table. I have a big bucket of water near my side. Using one large brush and a lot of water, I brush on the dominant color (three different blues) over the entire surface. Next, consider where to place the focal point (the reason why you are painting this in the first place). Near the focal point, add the two spice colors. This supports and attracts the viewer to look at the focal point first. Black and White is used sparingly and to adjust color. With all these techniques, don’t forget to all add the colorful whims of a creative artist. Practice on smaller warm-up pieces and be a painter!
