எம்ஆர்ஐ ஸ்கேன் இல்லாமல் மூளைக் கட்டியை குணப்படுத்த முடியுமா? Dr.Roopesh Kumar Can Brain Tumor be treated without MRI scan? When you get symptoms that are to be suspected, and when you consult the neuro doctor, the doctor usually prescribes a scan. The scan with which we can diagnose brain tumor is an MRI scan. It will also be seen on CT scan, but in most cases, not much detail would be visible on CT scan. Only in an MRI scan will we be able to see the nature of the problem clearly. When doing the MRI scan, it is possible to find not just the tumor but also the effect the tumor has on the brain. At times, the nerves around the brain can swell up. We call it edema. That is visible. To what extent is the nerve being compressed? All these things can be understood from the MRI scan. Apart from the tumor, the impact around the tumor can be clearly seen on an MRI scan. Would an MRI alone be enough? Surely not. MRI scan is enough, but in case of an MRI, the MRI scan done before 10 years is clearly different from the MRI scan that is taken today. You can't just take an MRI scan generally and diagnose a tumor only from that. Nowadays, there are many advancements in MRI scan itself. Based on the MRI scan we can find whether the tumor is a good tumor or a bad tumor, like we have mentioned earlier, we can find if it is a grade 1 tumor, or a grade 2 tumor, or a grade 3 tumor, or a grade 4 tumor. Mostly based on the MRI scan, we will be able to guess up to 90%. For every center of the body, there is a switch in the brain. So, where are these switches, where is it positioned with regards to the tumor? Whether the switches in front of the tumor, or behind the tumor, or is it within the tumor itself? In order to find this Functional MRI or FMRI is needed. For tumours that originate in certain places, FMRI has to be done. Only then, it would be easy for us to protect the nerves when doing the treatment. The brain itself is like electrical circuits. Suppose there is a switch and a fan, there is wire connecting it. The brain's structure too is like that. There is a switch for every part. Nerves are the wires and are referred to as tracks. Are the tracks away from the tumor? or do the tracks pass through the tumor? or are the tracks just behind the tumor? such things have to be understood first. Only then the right treatment can be provided. So in general MRI, these things are not done. After we have precisely identified the tumor in the MRI, before proceeding with the next stage of treatment there is functional MRI, MRI tractography, perfusion scan are some of the scans. Your doctor would suggest that and you should take those scans. If the scans are taken, we can find out the nature of the tumor, it would be useful to plan the treatment. Once the treatment is over, we do a follow-up MRI. What is the response of the tumor? Is the tumor cleared? Is a new tumor growing? All such things can be understood from an MRI post treatment. There is the possibility of knowing many things from the MRI scan itself. Therefore, MRI scan has to be done in a good center. Earlier, to take MRI scan there are machines called .5 Tesla, 1.5 Tesla and also 3 Tesla. Here Tesla denotes the strength of the magnet. So, the more Tesla, the higher clarity. Even minute details can be seen clearly. So, when certain MRI scans are done on 3 Tesla, it would be easy to provide treatment and it would also be easy to understand the details of the tumor. If a person's hand becomes immobile, is the problem in the hand or the hand's switch that is in the brain? or is the problem in the wires? This has to be understood first. These are the things that we can learn from an MRI scan.
