A little piece of heaven on earth, Mairung Gaon, or Mayrong Forest Village in Mayrong Forest, is an organic forest village and a great offbeat destination in the Kalimpong District. A village so remote and offbeat that you won’t find it on Google Maps. The only way to reach the village is either by searching using the name of your homestay or with the help of a local cab driver. Raja Sha, our driver from our Dooars trip, picked us up from NJP station and took us to Mairung Gaon or Mayrong Gaon. It is a small forest village with organic farms all around the handful of houses and homestays, and so was our homestay. Tummy full of yummy momos on the way to our homestay. Maya’s Tibetan Homestay, has a great view of the Himalayas and especially Mt. Kangchenjunga, the 3rd-highest mountain in the world. Our lunch menu was full of organic vegetables from their own farm. The view, the fresh air devoid of pollution, and a great view made our stay more than worth it. The host and the person taking care of the guests were equally friendly and accommodating. An evening walk through the village and into the forest was refreshing and rejuvenating. We were served freshly made momos along with chutney prepared using Dalle Khursani or Dalle as evening snacks. The next day, after having breakfast of puri with matar and chana curry, we set off for sightseeing. After a great off-roading experience, we reached Duka Falls in the middle of Mayrong Forest, a waterfall that usually sees its glory during the monsoons. Kangchenjunga. Also known as New Darjeeling, Sillery Gaon is an ideal place to visit during the summer to escape the heat.
