In this video we discuss the book, "The Race Around The World," a collection of essays by Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland about their global travels at the end of the 19th-century. As the year 1888 reached its close and turned into 1889, these two Victorian women journalists competed in a race to beat the imaginary record set by Jules Verne's fictitious character in his novel, "Around the World in 80 Days." The race is also described in Bisland's book, "A Flying Trip Around the World" and Matthew Goodman's book, "Eighty Days." We discuss the widely different writing styles and cultural attitudes of Bly vs. Bisland and the ways in which their works are a window into another time and place.
