Date filmed: Tuesday the 30th of January 2024 Videos filmed at: 10:32 | 10:38 | 10:44 Route: East Coast Main Line Between Doncaster (DON) and York (YRK) Stations Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with Obstacle Detection (MCB-OD) Filming location: Bar Croft Lane, Haywood (DN6 0EG) A trio of very fast trains can be seen speeding past this very quiet and rural level crossing, around 2 miles or so north of Joan Croft Junction on the East Coast Main Line, at over 100mph. The general area here is the rural settlement of Haywood, and this level crossing is accompanied by a sadly dilapidated-looking former crossing keeper's house, and a crossing keeper manned the gates here until the mid 2010s only opening them when a vehicle wished to cross as this road is incredibly quiet. Since the full renewal, the crossing keeper has gone and the level crossing is now supervised by and operated from Doncaster's signalling centre, monitored through an Obstacle Detection system which scans the crossing as it's auto-lowered on the approach of a train, releasing the signals reading over it to be cleared (allow trains to proceed) if the system is satisfied the crossing is clear. At full line speed, the trains are well over 4-5 miles away when they 'strike in', though they cover this distance in only around two minutes or so; it's strange to imagine that a train a mile away travelling at line speed (125mph) will pass you within thirty seconds! A chunk of this wait has been cut from the lowerings in this video, although this cut is quite well smoothed-out on the tripod-aided shots.
