Getting more distance off the tee is a goal for many golfers, and increasing your club head speed is a key factor in achieving that. Hi, I’m Mark Sturgess from Mark Sturgess Golf Coaching at Kingsway Golf Center, and I want to share some straightforward drills and tips to help you boost your driver speed and add yards to your drives. Starting Point: Measuring Your Current Club Head Speed Before jumping into drills, it’s important to establish a baseline. Using a launch monitor, I hit my driver with my normal swing and recorded a club head speed of 93.2 mph, which generated a carry distance of 237 yards. While that’s decent, I’m aiming to increase my speed by a few miles per hour to gain more distance. Key Technique to Increase Club Head Speed The main focus to gain club head speed is improving your body rotation and hand speed. Here’s how you can break it down: 1. Let Your Left Heel Lift Slightly By allowing your left heel to lift a little during your backswing, you increase shoulder rotation. This additional turn helps generate more power and leverage. It’s important to note that this small adjustment alone isn’t enough, but it sets the foundation for increased speed. 2. Practice Swinging the Driver “Backwards” To build hand speed and get a better feel for the club’s leverage, try this drill: grip the club by the end of the shaft, holding it above the ground, and swing it around your body in the opposite direction of a normal swing. Focus on moving the grip quickly and making a loud “whoosh” sound as the club cuts through the air. This exercise helps develop faster hand action and wrist leverage, which translates into more club head speed. Putting It All Together: Combining Rotation and Hand Speed After warming up with the “backwards” swings to increase hand speed, return to your normal swing and incorporate the feeling of your left heel lifting to encourage a bigger shoulder turn. The goal is to combine the increased rotation with quicker hands and wrists to generate more club head speed. When I tried this sequence, my club head speed increased by over 2 mph, taking me to 95.7 mph and adding roughly 10 yards to my carry distance. After repeating the drills and focusing on those sensations, I managed to push my speed up to 98 mph, which gave me a carry of 265 yards—about 20 yards more than my initial swing. Why Speed Isn’t Everything: The Importance of Technique While boosting club head speed is crucial, it’s equally important to maintain proper club path and attack angle. Speed without good technique can lead to inconsistent shots and loss of accuracy. Focus on smooth, controlled swings that blend speed with solid fundamentals. Practice swinging the driver “backwards” by gripping the end and swinging it above the ground to develop hand speed and wrist leverage.
