In this first of two instalments NICK LERA brings us a most comprehensive survey of steam on New Zealand’s South Island railways. A major tour in 2000 with a streamlined J class 4-8-2 takes us down the spectacular East coast from the island’s northern tip up to Pleasant Point, on the way to Oamaru and Dunedin. Pausing at Christchurch, an Ab Pacific takes us on a side trip over the spectacular Arthur’s Pass before double heading further south with the J class. The tour made brief stops at steam museum lines along the way. To do them justice, Lera made a return visit the following year to make a study of no less than 8 branches all of which have 19th century and Edwardian British built gems in action, plus Heisler and Climax logging locos. ‘Cornucopia of Vintage Traction’ is no exaggeration, especially when a Model T Ford railcar and Christchurch’s 1920s city tramcars are thrown into the mix.
