On an early November evening as the sun is beginning to set this lovely circular walk is around the beautiful area of Swallow Falls in North Wales. Nestled in the Welsh countryside this spectacular multiple waterfall on the River Llugwy near Betws-y-Coed is 138 feet (42 metres) high and is lined by a beautiful woodland of beech, conifer and birch trees. The Autumn to Spring months are when the waterfall looks at its best as the rain filled river cascades down the limestone rocks. Following the descending steps along the riverbank there are a number of viewing platforms that we stop at to see this beautiful waterfall from high above to right down below on the river. in 1899 it was suggested that Swallow Falls could be used to generate electricity and in 1913 the second Lord Ancaster gave it to the local council who began charging to visit the attraction in order to pay off the £15,000 debt from installing water and electricity supplies to the nearby village of Betws-y-Coed. Once the debt was paid off they continued to charge which resulted in the village having the lowest rates in the country. By 1974 the cheap water and electricity rates ended after a local government reorganisation. Swallow Falls was featured in the opening scene of the 2020 Warner Bros film Wonder Woman 1984, which starred Gal Gadot. We finish our walk back where we began as the autumn leaves gently fall from the trees and the colours of the evening sunset reflect beautifully at the foot of the waterfall.
