Acids, Bases, and the Henderson Hasselbalch Equation (Part 1 of 3)

In this video, I refer to some general chemistry concepts, including Bronsted acids and bases, their definitions, and how they apply to the Henderson Hasselbalch Equation. After discussing the definitions Bronsted of acids and bases, I go on to describe a typical acid-base reaction: an acid and a base react to create a conjugate base and a conjugate acid, respectively. I give two different ways to depict the classical acid-base reaction. Then, I move on to derive the Henderson Hasselbalch Equation from the classical reaction by first writing out the Ka (Acid Dissociation Constant) expression followed by rearrangement of the components of the expression that allows for an easy way to throw in some logarithms and simplify to the final equation, which relates pH, pKa, and the [base]/[acid] (the base to acid ratio). I then briefly mention that strong bases have high Ka values and low pKa values, as this idea is imperative to keep in mind when thinking about and using the Henderson Hasselbalch Equation.
