It then became the subject of nostalgia. Dess Chew, the owner and head designer of an interior design company in Singapore, is always on the lookout for ideas that fit his philosophy: make the old look new again. In a world of steel and glass, rattan no longer had a place. Where streets once housed proud furniture makers, now they hide their craft from view. Dess goes to Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, to learn skills from curved line maker Master Zeng, whose specialty includes the making of rocking chairs.
