Ear Infections on the Rise

In this session, Dr. Judy discusses the announcement released recently that ear infections in dogs is on the rise. She discusses some of the reasons that a dog may get an ear infection including a poor diet. She then discusses the correct treatment of an ear infection. Diagnosis is key in solving ear infections. Veterinarians need to look into the ear to determine if the infection is external or internal. Getting a culture is the next step to know which bacteria is living in the ear which will lead to selecting an appropriate antibiotic to treat the infection. Dr. Judy then talks about the proper way to clean our dogs' ears and what not to do. See the link below for a video Dr. Judy made in 2017 teaching how to clean a dog's ears. She concludes with advising not to use water based products nor alcohol based products. Aloe and Witch Hazel will not burn and will dry quickly. Coconut Oil can also be used to soothe the irritation.
