[Anchor] As U.S. automaker Ford has decided to sharply scale back its electric vehicle business, the fallout has spread to South Korea’s battery industry. Large-scale battery supply contracts with Korean companies have also been terminated. With both the United States and Europe slowing the pace of their EV transition policies, Korean battery makers are now being forced to revise their strategies. Reporter Lee Jae-hee. [Report] U.S. automaker Ford once announced an “all-in” strategy on electric vehicles. [John Lawle/CFO, Ford Motor Company/2022: "A 10% company adjusted EBIT margin with more than 2 million EVs which is one third of our global vehicle volume within 4 years."] Less than five years later, the company has reversed course. Ford has effectively formalized a downsizing of its EV business, halting production of its flagship electric pickup truck and restructuring operations around hybrids and internal combustion engine vehicles. The impact has spilled over to Korean battery makers. LG Energy Solution saw its 9.6 trillion won battery supply contract with Ford signed last year canceled, while SK On has also dissolved its battery joint venture with Ford in the United States. Adding to the pressure, the U.S. EV market itself has cooled amid moves such as the elimination of EV subsidies. The European Union has also effectively withdrawn its plan to ban sales of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035, raising concerns about a global slowdown in demand. Battery companies are now seeking new opportunities by diversifying their businesses. One area drawing attention is batteries for energy storage systems, or ESS. As AI data center construction surges worldwide, demand for ESS is rising rapidly, prompting battery makers to ramp up production of lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries suited for such use. [Kim Seung-tae/Head of Policy Support, Korea Battery Industry Association: “Production diversification is a positive signal. The slowdown in the EV market is only a temporary adjustment, and the broader trend toward electrification is unlikely to change.”] As the EV market enters a period of pause, the battery industry as a whole is being called on to undergo structural changes.
