This talk challenges the dominant narrative that artificial intelligence is neutral, objective, and inevitable. Drawing on lived experience in education, engineering, and data science, Karen Colbert reveals how AI systems often reproduce historical inequities because they are built on incomplete data and narrow assumptions about who matters. She offers a reframing that moves audiences from fear or blind optimism to informed agency, showing how individuals and institutions can shape AI to expand opportunity rather than reinforce existing barriers. Karen Colbert is a data scientist, education strategist, author, and national advocate for culturally grounded STEM and AI education. She serves as chair of the General Education Department and lead math faculty at Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College, advancing quantitative and computational literacy for Indigenous and adult reentry learners. Named an RStudio Scholar, the first data carpentries instructor trainer among Tribal Colleges, and a member of the American Indian College Fund’s faculty advisory committee, she leads national efforts to reimagine STEM, data science, and AI in higher education through Indigenous frameworks by delivering keynotes, workshops, and trainings that promote cultural integrity and digital sovereignty. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
