Watch this video to get all the MCAT study tips you need to do well on this section of the exam! There are a few specific additional periodic terms you will need to be familiar with for the MCAT. The first of these are the main group elements, also called the representative elements. These include the elements in periodic groups 1 and 2 (the s-block), and 13 through 18 (the p-block). These elements are the most abundant elements on earth, as well as elsewhere in the solar system and the universe. The transition elements, located between group 3 and 12 (the d-block) include the compounds you typically associate with the term ‘metal,’ such as iron and copper. The MCAT will expect you to know that they are typically the source of color for most colored compounds, a function of their unique d-orbital electron configurations.
