Peaceful Presence | Part 1 — A Practice of Staying All-Levels Daily Yoga Flow with Shalabhasana (Locust Pose) Welcome to Part 1 of Peaceful Presence—a practice of staying. Before we begin, grab a folded blanket. You’ll have the option to use it under the chest, hips, or legs to help make Shalabhasana (Locust Pose) more accessible and supportive for your body. In this full-length, all-levels yoga class, we gently and intentionally work with Shalabhasana, a grounding back-body strengthening pose that invites us to stay present with sensation, effort, and breath—without rushing or forcing. About Shalabhasana (Locust Pose). In this class, we move through a thoughtful, intentional arc designed to support both the body and the nervous system. We begin by centering, giving ourselves a moment to arrive exactly as we are. From there, we set an intention, not as something to achieve, but as a gentle direction—an anchor we can return to throughout the practice. We then move into a gradual warm-up, preparing the body with awareness and care. Each movement builds purposefully, allowing strength, heat, and sensation to develop in a way that feels sustainable and supportive. As the practice unfolds, we progressively build toward Shalabhasana, meeting the pose with curiosity rather than force. After the peak of the practice, we mindfully cool down, giving the body time to integrate the work we’ve done. Physical benefits include: Strengthening the back body, including the spinal muscles, glutes, and hamstrings Improving posture by activating the muscles that support the spine Opening the chest and shoulders, counteracting slouching and tension Building steady, functional strength without compression in the lower back Energetic benefits include: Awakening and stabilizing the Manipura (solar plexus) chakra, supporting confidence and inner strength. Cultivating grounded vitality rather than sharp intensity. Encouraging balanced effort—lifting with intention while staying connected to breath and sensation What Peaceful Presence Means Peaceful presence is the ability to stay with what’s happening—internally and externally—without abandoning yourself. In this practice, peaceful presence means noticing effort without gripping, sensation without judgment, and breath without control. It’s not about being perfectly calm; it’s about staying connected, even when things feel challenging. A Personal Note Peaceful presence is something I return to again and again in my own life. It helps me show up calm, steady, and clear-minded, especially during moments that require strength and vulnerability at the same time. In Shalabhasana, this shows up as the ability to lift with intention—balancing effort and ease—without overdoing or checking out. This practice continues to teach me how to meet challenge with steadiness rather than force.
