Filmed on Friday, October 18 2024, I drive around Springfield, OH to see what's going on. The Springfield area was officially ceded to the United States by the Shawnee Native Americans in 1795, six years before the founding of Springfield. The city was founded in 1801 by James Demint who named the city for Springfield, Massachusetts. Early growth in Springfield was stimulated by construction of the National Road, which was the government's first federal highway, which extended to Springfield in 1838. Springfield was the road's terminus until 1848 while politicians argued over its future route. President Andrew Jackson decided to push the road straight west to Richmond, Indiana. During the mid to late 19th century, the manufacturing industry flourished in Springfield. During that time, Springfield was called "Champion City" referencing the farm equipment brand "Champion", which was purchased by International Harvester in 1902. Harry Aubrey Toulmin Sr., the Wright Brothers patent attorney, wrote their 1904 airplane patent in Springfield. The patent was granted in 1906. Also in 1906, A.B. Graham, the local superintended of schools established a "Boys and Girls Agricultural Club" which was the beginning of the national organization the "4-H Club". From 1916 to 1926, 10 automobile companies operated in Springfield. The city population peaked in 1960 at over 82,000. In 1983, Newsweek called Springfield one of America's "Dream Cities" however the theme of the article was that the American Dream was in decline. The decline of American manufacturing hit Springfield very hard and in 2011 Springfield was called the "unhappiest city in the country". In 2014, the city began the "Welcome Springfield" initiative to attempt to attract immigrants to improve the local economy. About four years later, Haitian immigrants began to arrive. By 2024, between 15,000 to 20,000 Haitian immigrants had settled in the city. The influx of Haitians triggered an increase in anti-immigrant sentiment among existing residents. Tensions were aggravated in 2023 when an unlicensed Haitian driver crashed into a school bus, killing one child and injuring 23 others. In 2024, the city drew international attention over Donald Trump's claim that Haitian immigrants were "eating the dogs and eating the cats". This led to dozens of bomb threats, school closures, and other disruptions. Trump won the county by 20 points and won the State of Ohio by the largest margin in decades. #drivingtour #ohio #springfieldohio
