We knew that we couldn't leave the Pacific Northwest without heading northeast to Mount Rainier National Park. Not only is Rainier an active volcano and among the highest in the lower 48 of the United States at 14,410', but it is also the most glaciated peak in the contiguous US. It's also a prominent feature on the horizon across the Pacific Northwest. One of the most important questions for locals and visitors alike is whether the mountain is out (read: can you see the mountain) -- and we learned quickly that even if you are literally standing on the mountain, it might not be out! Join us for a jam-packed three (okay, really 2.5) days in Mount Rainier National Park. Despite heading to the park at the beginning of their summer season (early July), there was still tons of snowpack from the hard winter and spring. We hoped to see lots of alpine meadows, flowers, and wildlife, but instead we saw snow, ice, and clouds...and a few animals! We start our adventure in Ashford, Washington and head towards Paradise Visitor Center. From there, we hike along the famous Skyline and Alta Vista Trails and see some impressive views of the surrounding Cascade Mountain range. As we said, despite heading north on the mountain, we could never fully see Rainier's peak because of the low cloud cover. Day 2 brought up to the highest driving point on the mountain - Sunrise Visitor Center - via Packwood. We would HIGHLY recommend you take time to travel to Packwood to check out the town's local herd of Roosevelt elk. Since we were there at the beginning of the summer season, the Visitor Center was closed, but we still enjoyed area until the clouds rolled in and we headed south for a hike. At a Park Ranger's suggestion, we headed towards White River Campground and the Glacier Basin Trailhead. This is a great trail for those less inclined to hike deep into the mountain, but still want to experience the various environments the park offers. In addition to views of the river (and a crossing!), we hiked with a deer, saw some waterfalls, and checked out amazing views of Emmons Glacier and a glacial pond. We end our time in Mount Rainier National Park checking out the park's famous Longmire section. Originally a homestead, lodge, and resort, Longmire once housed the Park's headquarters. We took time to explore the history of the park at the museum and checked out the National Park Inn and General Store. --------------- Subscribe to follow our adventures: / @jlewtravels Follow us on Instagram for more pictures and videos of our adventures: / jlewtravels --------------- #mountrainier #mountrainiernationalpark #mtrainier #skylinetrail #hike #hiking #nationalpark #pnw #emmonsglacier #sunrise #paradise #thingstodo #traveltips --------------- Timestamps 0:00 Intro | What's Coming Up! 0:33 Nisqually Glacier Overlook 1:35 Driving to Paradise Visitor Center 3:37 Beginning Skyline Trail 5:01 Wildlife and Views Along the Trail 8:44 Glacier Vista Trail Views 9:19 Fryingpan Creek 10:40 Driving to Sunrise Visitor Center 11:43 Snow and Clouds at Sunrise 13:17 Glacier Basin Trail 14:35 River Crossing to See Emmons Glacier 15:10 Views of the Glacier 16:00 Longmire | Next video: Seattle, WA 16:45 Bloopers --------------- #52HikeChallenge Goal: 18/52 1.
