Boys CIF Southern Section Open Division Semi-finals It’s been 2 years since Harvard Westlake has been in the Southern Section Open Division Championship. That team was loaded with D1 talent that is playing college basketball throughout the country. There were some on that 2024 squad that remember what it felt like. Dom Bentho, Amir Jones and Cole Holden were all underclassmen with Bentho getting the most minutes in the championship game. Amir Jones now a Senior says he and his teammates knew from the beginning of the year this is where they belonged, vying for another championship ring. First the #7 Seed Wolverines would have to get by this years Cinderella, La Mirada who was seeded #12 in this years widened Open Division. Many sports reporters would agree they didn’t deserve to be a 12 seed but nevertheless Head Coach Randy Oronoz once again had his team believing they deserved to be competing against the best. All year long Coach Oronoz loaded his schedule with top teams across the state and nationally. They got knocked around a lot especially early in the season but it was all to get them ready and prepared to do something special in the postseason. La Mirada made some noise taking down St John Bosco in pool play and then upsetting #3 seed Redondo Union to reach the semi-finals. So once again La Mirada was on the road trying to take down one of the Southern Sections most successful programs in Harvard Westlake. From the tip Cole Holden and Joe Sterling were off to a fantastic start both hitting 2 threes each while Gene Roebuck paced the Matadores with 8 points. The Wolverines rode the hot hand of Sterling who led with 11 points. After the first quarter they were locked at 19 apiece. The La Mirada offense was looking good in the 2nd quarter pushing the break and moving the ball well to get high percentage looks. Roebuck continued to be the go to guy offensively for the Matadores who was up to 17 points at the half. The play of Cisco Munoz controlling the pace of the offense while scoring 6 points was crucial in La Mirada's 2nd quarter push. La Mirada led by 7 points 26-19 late in the first half. Pierce Thompson's drive to the basket and score right before the buzzer cut the La Mirada lead to 2 points, 36-34 at halftime. The 3rd quarter proved to be the most crucial part of the game. Head Coach David Rebibo changed up some defensive tactics putting a longer Thompson on Roebuck and to give him a different look. La Mirada's offense looked stagnant early on and Harvard Westlake came out hot starting the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 42-36. Amir Jones got going offensively scoring 8 of this 14 points in the 3rd quarter. Sterling added another 10 points as Harvard Westlake outscored La Mirada 22-7 in the quarter and led 56-43. La Mirada would make one more last run starting the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 6 points 56-50. The Wolverines went inside to Dom Bentho as he scored 6 of his 8 points in the final frame to push the lead back into the double digits. Joe Sterling finished with 25 points as Harvard Westlake returns to the Southern Section Finals with a 71-57 win over La Mirada. Gene Roebuck finished with a game high 29 points to lead the Matadores. Harvard Westlake will match up with inter-league rival and #1 Seed Sierra Canyon Saturday at 6pm in Toyota Arena for the CIF Southern Section Championship. Sierra Canyon got the best of Harvard Westlake earlier this year 55-47 at home. This is the first time in the Open Division finals that 2 teams from the same division will battle for the title.
