Damien vs Etiwanda - Baseline League Championship This year the Baseline League decided on a league tournament to crown its champion. This eliminated playing every team in the division twice and instead a win and advance tournament. Damien and Etiwanda, both ranked inside the top 15 CIF-SS computer rankings, were almost a no-doubter to meet for the Baseline Championship. The last time these two teams met, Damien got the best of Etiwanda using a 24-0 start to begin the game to win on the road. Damien was hosting the final game against the Eagles. The Spartans started the game with three straight layups missed and against an Etiwanda squad, points come at a premium. Behind some great play of Elijah Smith the Spartans had the early edge 14-13 at the end of the 1st quarter. Etiwanda known for their high pressure lock down defense, held Damien's top 2 season scores Eli Garner (0 points) and Zaire Rasshan (5 points) in the first half. Meanwhile sophomore Devin Mitchell had two big threes as the Eagles grabbed a 29-24 halftime lead. Garner who was also in foul trouble in the first half with 3 fouls, picked up his 4th foul with 3:53 in the 3rd quarter and had to sit. Etiwanda's defense continued to disrupt Rasshan who never got into a scoring rhythm. Mitchell knocked down a three on the wing to give Etiwanda their biggest lead of the game thus far 37-30. Etiwanda led 37-32 heading into the 4th quarter. Damien's struggles offensively continued and bled into the free throw line. In a critical stretch late in the 4th quarter the Spartans went 1-5 from the charity stripe (4-13 for the game). What could have been a three point game was a 7 point deficit late in the 4th. Isaiah Benn, Etiwanda's leading scorer for the game with 13 points, scored 5 points in the final quarter including going 3-3 from the free throw line. Etiwanda upsets Damien 50-43 on the Spartans home floor to win the Baseline League Championship Tournament. Now both teams await their fate to where they will land in the postseason. Damien ranked #8 and Etiwanda at #13 in the most recent computer rankings, will find out on Saturday if the CIF Southern Section will take 8, 10 or possible 12 teams in the Open Division. There is a possible scenario where both teams might meet the cut-off for the open division. One thing is true, wherever they land the Eagles and the Spartans will be a tough out in post season play.
