Breaking Ground digs beneath the surface of one of the most important – yet least understood – stages of any major infrastructure project: ground investigation. Each episode brings you straight onto site with the people who make it happen. Joining the pod for this deep dive is: Stephen Rowlands: Head of Construction & Supply Chain. Stephen brings over 25 years’ experience in the construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution electricity networks across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. His expertise spans overhead lines, underground cabling, wooden pole networks and complex grid civil works, with a career built almost entirely at delivery level on live networks. Stephen has worked with some of the industry’s leading contractors and specialists, including Babcock, Enterprise Power Services, Transmission Links Ireland, ATP and JM Murphy & Sons. Kalam Harris: Senior Construction Manager. Kalam brings over 20 years’ experience delivering transmission and distribution infrastructure across the UK and Canada. His background spans overhead lines, underground cabling and wooden pole networks, with hands-on delivery for major contractors including Balfour Beatty, Babcock and Murphy's. He has worked across complex rural and remote environments, including specialist cable ploughing with ATP and international projects. Mark Anderson: Senior Civil Engineer. Mark is a civil engineer with over 10 years’ experience in the renewable energy sector. A graduate of the University of Glasgow, he began his career at Sweco, progressing from graduate to engineer while working on the design and delivery of major onshore and offshore renewable projects, including substations. Later joining SSE Renewables, delivering onshore cable routes, substations, hydrogen concept projects and solar and battery developments. Mark is now Senior Civil Engineer, focusing on the delivery of complex energy infrastructure across Wales. Together, they break down what ground investigation really involves, why it matters and how it shapes every decision we make. From working sensitively with landowners and adapting to individual circumstances, to using local expertise and preparing for what comes next. This is ground investigation explained clearly and candidly by the people with boots on the ground. Whether you’re part of the industry, following our projects, or simply curious about how the grid beneath your feet gets built, this uncovers the realities behind the work.
