This episode brings you two female engineers to reflect on real-world change in the sector, from shifting routes into engineering to the growing range of roles now shaping how infrastructure is designed, delivered and operated. Joyce Wilson: Head of Engineering • Pennaeth Peirianneg Chartered Electrical Engineer with nearly 30 years’ experience working across the UK energy sector. She holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and has built her career spanning contractors, Distribution Network Operators and Transmission Owners. Her experience includes senior engineering roles with Reyrolle, Yorkshire Electricity Distribution (YEDL), Northern Electric Distribution (NEDL), SSE Power Distribution and SSEN Transmission. Across these organisations, Joyce has worked extensively in network development, supporting the definition of early concept designs that respond directly to system needs and long-term grid requirements. Fiona Cullinane: Senior Substation Engineer • Uwch Rheolwr Prosiect Fiona brings over 12 years’ experience in the transmission sector, having spent 12.5 years with SSEN Transmission in a combination of engineering and network development roles. She began her career as a substation engineer, delivering a wide range of projects from asset replacement schemes through to new-build substations. Her experience spans the full project lifecycle — from early concept and design through to construction, commissioning and energisation — across transmission voltages from 132kV to 400kV. In the later part of her career, Fiona moved into a senior network development project manager role, working closely with system planners to develop coordinated, economic and efficient connection solutions for developers seeking access to the transmission network. Whether you’re working in the sector, considering a career in engineering, or simply interested in how the grid is being shaped for the decades ahead, this episode offers a clear and honest insight into the profession and the role it plays in powering everyday life. Grid Sessions is the podcast from Green GEN Cymru, sharing straightforward conversations with the people tackling the challenges of building a stronger, more resilient electricity grid.
