In this episode, CancerNetwork® spoke with kidney oncologists Wayne A. Marasco MD, PhD, and Thomas Powles, MBBCS, MCRP, MD, as well as KidneyCan president, Bryan Lewis, about key insights in kidney cancer based on topics discussed at the 2025 Kidney Cancer Research Summit in Boston, Massachusetts. Topics included CAR T-cell therapy, quality of life considerations following treatment with belzutifan, and challenges and strategies related to funding for and access to kidney cancer treatment developments. CancerNetwork first spoke with Marasco, a professor in the Department of Cancer Immunology and Virology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an associate physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, about a presentation he gave on a novel CAR T-cell therapy being developed to target CAIX and CD70 in clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Then, Powles, a professor of genitourinary oncology, lead for Solid Tumor Research, and director of Barts Cancer Institute at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital of Queen Mary University of London, discussed results from a quality-adjusted time without symptoms or toxicity, or Q-TWiST, analysis comparing belzutifan with everolimus he presented at the conference. Finally, Lewis, president at KidneyCan, discussed challenges and initiatives related to expanding funding for kidney cancer research as well as addressing barriers to treatment access for patients.
