(11 Jun 1997) T/I: 10:00:30 "Hotlips Hoolihan" and "Radar" weren't there, but two of their co-stars were, when the US Army medical unit which inspired the long-running Korean War television series MASH, disbanded Wednesday (11/6). On hand for a sentimental salute when the 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) folded its tents were stars Larry Linville, who played the role of Major Frank Burns, and David Ogden Stiers, who played Major Charles Winchester III, as well as MASH producer Larry Gelbart. The unit was not exactly folding its tents -- those disappeared after the 1950-53 Korean War ended, leaving tens of thousands of US troops stationed on the southern side of the divided peninsula. The six officers and 60 enlisted personnel of the 43rd MASH left its latest home, at Pyongtaek, between Seoul and the Korean demilitarized zone, to be replaced by a more modern DEPMEDS (Deployable Medical System). Created in 1933 the old unit -- then the 8055th -- saw service during World War II as a part of the Sixth US Army Corps in Algeria, India, Burma and China, before being reactivated for the Korean War. In Korea it was assigned to the Eighth Army, where it moved with the tides of war up and down the peninsula, and at one time was in the now-North Korean capital of Pyongyang treating thousands of American and allied casualties. Its logo "Best Care Anywhere" will now only be seen on the MASH television series, reruns of which are still shown worldwide. Thankfully because of Larry Gelbart, he provided us with wonderful scripts and we had the great priviledge of doing not doing a show that was amusing but also of great quality"; SOT actor David Ogden Stiers (who played Major Charles Winchester III) in english: "There is a sense of proper honour and the setting aside of an honourable unit to make way for the next stage of technology, preparedness, technique, you know being able to save people's lives. I hope it is never necessary, but if it is necessary, it's wonderful to think that dedicated people like the MASH people have been, that their replacements will be as prepared as they were. It is a sense of step in history, isn't it."
