This film series about female genital mutilation (FGM) by the SAIDA expert center for FGM is aimed at doctors and medical professionals especially in the fields of gynaecology, obstetrics and paediatrics. It deals with the following aspects: 1. Care in Gynaecological Clinics 2. Obstetrics and Child Protection 3. Surgical Therapy The three short films deliver background information and practical knowledge. They also provide details on the medical professions' own options for action. This includes: – Identification of FGM in those affected; –Specification of FGM type according to WHO classification and correct preparation of expert reports; – Sensitive treatment for those affected; – Prevention and protection of children at risk; – Specialized centers in Germany. Why is the Federal Republic of Germany taking action? The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, commonly known as Istanbul Convention, which came into force in Germany on 1 February 2018, obliges the federal, state and local governments and all state institutions to comply with guidelines for combating and preventing violence against women. Article 38 of the Istanbul Convention deals with FGM. This film series for information and education of healthcare professionals contributes to the implementation of this area of the Istanbul Convention. According to the definition by the World Health Organisation (WHO), female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. FGM can lead to immediate health risks, as well as long-term complications to women’s physical, mental and sexual health. The practice is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights of girls and women and as an extreme form of gender discrimination. It has been banned through numerous international conventions. Still, over four million girls worldwide are subjected to this severe violence every year. More information on the practice, consequences and prevalence: https://saida.de/en/ FGM is also becoming increasingly common in America, Australia and Europe through migration. Figures for Germany were last presented by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) on 25 June 2020. According to these figures, 66,707 women and girls were affected by this violence in Germany at the time of the survey and up to 14,752 minors were at risk. For 2024, SAIDA assumes that around 110,000 women and girls are already affected or at risk. With this film series, SAIDA wants to contribute to improving the situation for those affected.
