All translations are certainly not equal. And the 4 main translation methods used in business produce widely different outcomes in terms of quality, time and cost. Choose the wrong type for your project and you could well end up with a translation that is not fit for purpose, or pay more than you need to. Fortunately, some simple knowledge will help you avoid those pitfalls. In this video we quickly explain the 4 translation methods most commonly used in business, identify their pros and cons, and suggest when to use, and to avoid each one. We look first at machine translation (eg Google Translate), then machine translation followed by a human editing process to fix the worst of the shortcomings with machine translation. The third type involves professional human translators who will produce higher quality than either of the earlier options, but at greater expense and with longer required time frames. The fourth method involves the highest level of translation quality – a human translation followed by a full second human translator review. To finish, we provide a set of simple rules of thumb to help identify the translation type best suited to any project.
